My name is Clarissa. Dante and I have been married for three years. He’s handsome, hardworking, and kind. He had everything a woman could ask for—except for one problem that was slowly destroying our marriage.
For three years, Dante has never slept beside me until morning.
Every night at exactly ten o’clock, he would kiss my forehead and say,
“Love, I’m going to sleep in Mom’s room. She needs me.”
My mother-in-law, Doña Soledad, lives in the room across from ours. She’s a bit forgetful and sharp-tongued, but she can still walk and eats well. I couldn’t understand why a 30-year-old man needed to sleep beside his mother every single night.
My mind started playing tricks on me.
“Why? Am I not enough?”
“Are they hiding something?”
“Is he just an extreme mama’s boy?”

We fought about it often.
“Dante! I’m your wife!” I shouted one night. “Why do you choose to sleep beside your mother instead of me? I feel like I’m just a decoration in this house!”
“Clarissa, please try to understand me,” Dante pleaded, always looking exhausted and sleep-deprived. “Mom is sick. She can’t be left alone.”
“Sick? She’s strong enough to yell at everyone every morning!” I snapped.
I had reached my limit. I began to suspect they were hiding something. Maybe he wasn’t really sleeping there. Maybe he was sneaking out the window to see a mistress. Or maybe there was something deeper… something darker.
I made a decision.
I would catch them.
FOLLOWING HIM INTO THE DARK
Here is the continuation of the story with a shocking plot twist that will completely change your perspective:
One Friday night, I pretended to be asleep. I felt Dante gently kiss my forehead before quietly leaving our bedroom. My heart pounding, I waited five minutes before getting up and following him barefoot.
I stopped in front of Doña Soledad’s door. No light seeped from underneath, but I heard strange sounds inside—the clanging of metal and faint groans of strain.
Slowly, I turned the doorknob. To my surprise, it wasn’t locked.
Inside the dim room, only a small nightlight glowed. I expected to see them lying side by side in bed—but what I saw froze me in place.
THE UNEXPECTED SCENE
Dante wasn’t lying beside his mother.
Instead, he was on the floor, kneeling next to a heavy metal mechanism attached to Doña Soledad’s bed. My mother-in-law appeared to be sleeping peacefully, but Dante was drenched in sweat. His hands were wrapped in bandages, raw and wounded, as he manually pulled a lever over and over.
“Dante?” I whispered.
He jumped in shock. “Clarissa! What are you doing here? Go back to the room—you’ll wake Mom!”
“What… what are you doing? Why are you on the floor? What is all that metal?” I asked, slowly stepping closer.
THE PAINFUL TRUTH
Dante lowered his head, his shoulders collapsing from exhaustion.
“Three years ago, before we got married, Mom was diagnosed with a rare lung and heart condition. When she lies flat, she stops breathing. This machine… it keeps her bed at the right angle so she can breathe properly,” he explained, his voice trembling.
“But why do you have to do it yourself? Why didn’t you buy an electric hospital bed?” I asked.
“The motor broke during our first week of marriage. We had no money—everything went to the wedding and Mom’s medication. I didn’t want you to worry. I didn’t want you to think Mom was a burden to our marriage,” Dante confessed. “So every night, I make sure the mechanism doesn’t fail. If I let go, the bed will collapse… and Mom might never wake up.”
But that wasn’t the end.
I stepped closer to the bed and held Doña Soledad’s hand. It was cold—terribly cold.
“Dante… why is Mom’s hand so cold?”
He looked at me with eyes full of tears and desperation.
“Clarissa, do you know why Mom is always irritable in the morning? Why she sometimes acts like she doesn’t recognize us?”
He turned to face me completely.
“Mom is dead, Clarissa. She died at dawn on our wedding day.”
I staggered backward. “What? That’s impossible! I see her eat, I hear her yelling!”
“What you see in the morning is her twin sister, Aunt Solita. She pretended to be Mom so we could keep the inheritance and this house, which is legally under Mom’s name as long as she’s alive. But at night… at night I sleep here because I can’t accept that she’s gone. This machine… it’s not for breathing. I built it to preserve Mom’s body under this house.”
I fell to my knees in tears.
The man I thought was just a “Mama’s Boy” was actually being consumed by grief and a terrible decision. The sacrifice I thought was love for a living mother was, in truth, a morbid refusal to let go of the past.
