THE TRIP

“Mang Karding” arrived at Vanessa’s apartment in an old van, not the luxury car Vanessa had expected.

“What’s that!” Vanessa complained as she got into the van. “This car stinks! It smells like dirt! No air conditioning?!”

“Excuse me, Ma’am,” Rafael replied (using a raspy voice). “Sir Rafael’s Rolls Royce is in the workshop. This is the only one available.”

“Bwisit!” Vanessa shouted. She turned to her three children who were quietly behind her. “Hey! You three! Don’t be naughty! You’ll ruin my make-up and clothes! If you get dirty, you’ll be mad at me later!”

Throughout the journey, Vanessa did nothing but tease Mang Karding.

“You drive so slowly! Are you stupid?!” “Make sure I don’t get dizzy! You’re just a driver, get your work done!”

Rafael remained silent, but inside, her heart was breaking. She could see in the rearview mirror the children trembling in fear of their mother.

THE MANSION AND THE INCIDENT

Upon arriving at the mansion, Vanessa was amazed. It was huge, with a fountain, and a very large garden. Her mood immediately changed. She became excited—not for Rafael, but for the treasure.

They got out of the car. Vanessa walked towards the grand entrance as if she owned the place.

On the side of the door, there was an old woman mopping the floor—Nanay Ising, the caretaker who raised Rafael. Being old, her hands were a bit shaky as she mopped.

As Vanessa passed by, Nanay Ising accidentally knocked over the bucket of water.

SPLASH!

Dirty water splashed on Vanessa’s expensive red heels.

The world stopped. Vanessa’s children turned pale.

“CHILD OF…!” Vanessa shouted.

In anger, Vanessa KICKED the bucket and STOMPED on Nanay Ising’s hand that was about to wipe her shoes.

“Oh my god!” Nanay Ising groaned.

“Stupid! Are you blind?!” Vanessa shouted. “Do you know how much this is?! This is more expensive than your life! You’re going to be even more stupid!”

“Mang Karding” (Rafael) came over to stop Vanessa.

“Ma’am, that’s enough. He’s old. It wasn’t intentional,” Rafael said calmly as he helped Nanay Ising stand up.

Vanessa turned to Mang Karding and pointed at him.

“Don’t order me around, you’re just a driver!” she shouted. “You! Get that old man out of here! I don’t want to see that look on his face! When Rafael arrives, I’ll make sure you two are fired! You scoundrels!”

THE REVEAL

Rafael took a deep breath. This was the last straw.

“He’s not leaving, Vanessa,” Rafael said. His voice changed—returning to his original baritone and powerful voice.

Vanessa was stunned. “W-What?”

Rafael slowly removed his hat. He removed the wig. He removed the dentures and the fake scar on his face.

Vanessa’s eyes widened. The color on her face disappeared. The driver she had cursed at, and the man in front of her now… were the same.

“R-Rafael…?” Vanessa whispered, her lips trembling.

“Yes, Vanessa,” Rafael replied coldly. “The driver you called a fool. The driver you ordered to throw out the caretaker who raised me.”

“Babe! H-Hon! That was just a joke! I was just stressed from the trip!” Vanessa suddenly grabbed Rafael’s arm. “Don’t you love me? I was just kidding!”

Rafael waved his hand away.

“I saw how you treat people who have nothing against you. I saw how your children are afraid of you. And I saw how you step on Nanay Ising’s hand.”

Rafael approached Nanay Ising and hugged her.

“The woman you stepped on is like my mother. And the driver you scolded is the person who will decide your future.”

Rafael faced the Security Guards standing on the side.

“Chief, get this woman out. She is banned from all my properties. And call the DSWD. I want them to investigate whether the children are safe with her. If not, I will educate them and adopt them.”

“Don’t! Rafael! Forgive me! Our marriage is a waste!” Vanessa begged as she was dragged out the gate.

Rafael looked at her one last time.
