At the foot of Mount Amihan in Rizal, 17-year-old Kiko is known as a tech enthusiast. He loves taking cinematic shots with his newly purchased drone. His dream is to become a famous travel vlogger. One Saturday morning, he climbed alone to the mountain’s viewing deck to capture footage of the sea of clouds.
As he flew the drone 300 feet above the ground, Kiko was amazed by the beauty of the scenery.
“This is beautiful! Perfect for a vlog intro!” Kiko whispered to himself as he looked at the controller screen.
He tried to fly the drone away, towards a part of the mountain called “Devil’s Drop”—a steep cliff that hikers are forbidden from visiting due to the dangerous path and sharp rocks.
As Kiko rotated the camera for a panoramic view, he noticed a strange color at the bottom of the cliff. Neon orange.
“What’s that? Trash?” he asked.
Out of curiosity, he lowered the drone’s altitude. He zoomed in on the camera. The 4K resolution was clear. When he saw the image on the screen, he almost dropped the controller.
This wasn’t trash.
It was a person. A man wearing an orange windbreaker. He was lying on the edge of a rocky outcrop, at the foot of a steep cliff. The man’s leg was bent at an unnatural angle—it was broken.
Kiko saw on the screen that the man’s hand moved. He waved weakly. He looked up at the drone, his face covered in blood and mud, begging for help.
“Oh my God! There’s someone!” Kiko shouted.
Kiko quickly sent the drone back to Home Point. After it landed, he ran down the mountain to the Ranger Station. He was panting as he caught up with Officer Mendez, the head of the rescue team.
“Sir! Sir! Help!” Kiko shouted. “There’s someone at Devil’s Drop! I saw it on my drone! His leg is broken, he’s still alive!”
The rescue team immediately moved. But when they got to the top of the cliff, they couldn’t see the victim. It was too steep and the bottom was covered in a thick canopy of trees and fog.
“Where, son?” Officer Mendez asked, using binoculars. “We can’t see anything. It’s dangerous to go down if we don’t know the exact location.”
“Sir, I’ll fly the drone again,” Kiko said determinedly. “I’ll be your eyes.”
Kiko flew the drone again. This time, not for the views, but for life.
The problem was, the wind was strong and his drone’s battery was only 20%.
“Let’s hurry, Sir. My battery is running low,” Kiko said nervously.

Kiko sent the drone to the top of the tree where he had last seen the man.
“There he is!” Kiko pointed at the screen. “Sir, he’s on the Northwest side, under the big boulder!”
Using the walkie-talkie, Kiko dictated the direction to the rappelers descending the cliff.
“A little left, Sir! There’s a big rock there, avoid it!” Kiko ordered while looking at the monitor. “The fog is coming down! Hurry up!”
The drone’s alarm sounded. BATTERY LOW. RETURN TO HOME.
“Not now…” Kiko whispered. He canceled the auto-return. He had to stay in the air until the rescuers reached the victim.
“Sir, can you see him? You’re only 10 meters away!”
“Positive!” Officer Mendez answered over the radio. “We can see the orange color!”
On the screen, Kiko saw the rescuers landing next to the victim. They immediately gave the man first aid and put him on a stretcher.
“Okay! We got him!” the rescuer shouted.
Kiko’s screen immediately went dead. 0% Battery. The drone fell to the grass, but Kiko didn’t care if it was damaged. He sat down on the ground and cried in relief.
It took five hours before the victim, identified as Mang Berting, was finally lifted, a solo hiker who had been missing for three days. If Kiko’s drone hadn’t found him, he would have surely died from hypothermia and dehydration.
Upon arriving at the base camp, Mang Berting was greeted by his crying wife and son. When they found out who had seen him, they approached Kiko.
“Son…” Mang Berting’s wife said sobbing. She held Kiko’s hand. “Thank you… Thank you for playing with the drone today. Without you, I would have no husband.”
Officer Mendez also saluted Kiko. “I love you, kid. Your tech is great, but your heart is even better.”
Since then, Kiko has been known not only as a “vlogger” in his hometown. He has been called “The Eagle of Mount Amihan”. He has proven that technology, when used correctly, is not just for entertainment, but a powerful instrument to connect the lives of others. The drone that others thought was just a toy, became an angel who saved a father who was almost swallowed by the forest.
