The entire living room was silent when I entered.
Not because anyone was impressed—
but because no one noticed me as Elena.
I was just an assistant in their eyes.
Trina, Mark’s secretary, smiled as she held a glass of wine. She was wearing the red dress I had bought myself, using a card that Mark didn’t know whose name was on it.
“Mark,” she said modestly, placing her hand on my husband’s arm, “your house is beautiful. It’s clearly the work of a responsible husband.”
The guests laughed.
I didn’t move.
I didn’t speak.
I just silently served the drinks.
But deep inside me, there was a wall that was slowly breaking down.
As I walked to the edge of the living room, I heard whispers.
“What a shame, isn’t it? That’s how Mark’s wife is.”
“No class. Doesn’t seem right for him.”
“That’s probably why Mark is so sloppy. He’s the only one I’m expecting.”
I smiled—not because I was happy, but because a strange clarity had entered my mind.
This is how the world is when they think you have no power.
And I suddenly understood why I had to stay silent for so long.
But tonight, I was no longer the Elena I used to be.
Around nine o’clock, Mark’s boss arrived—Mr. Jonathan Reed, CEO of Orion Tech Asia.
Mark stood up, almost spilling his wine in excitement.
“Sir! Welcome!” he almost bowed.
Reed smiled, neat and cold. Used to parties. Used to people pretending.
I approached to offer him a drink.
He didn’t accept it immediately.
He looked at me—directly, for a long time.
“Miss,” he said. “You arranged the catering?”
Mark was surprised.
“Ah—that’s the assistant, sir,” he replied quickly. “I’m sorry if—”
“I’m not asking you,” Reed interrupted.
The crowd stopped.
“That’s right,” I replied calmly. “I coordinated. Is there a problem?”
Reed looked at the tray, at the arrangement of the glasses, at the flow of service.
“Nothing,” he said. “To be honest… I rarely see this kind of organization at a private event.”
He nodded at me. A nod not for an assistant—
but for a professional.
Mark couldn’t help but feel uneasy.
“Sir,” he tried to get the conversation back on track, “Elena… just likes to go door to door. It’s that simple.”
Reed smiled. But not at him.
“Simple?” he asked. “Simple people, don’t think of this kind of system.”
Trina fell silent.
The smiles on the guests’ faces gradually receded.
Me?
Still silent.
A few minutes later, Reed approached me again.
“Miss Elena,” he clearly pronounced my name.
“We have a project. A regional expansion. I need someone who can observe… and who can keep quiet.”
Mark looked up.
“Sir…?”
“Not you,” he said bluntly. “Not yet.”
He looked at me.
“If you’re interested, let’s talk tomorrow. Not as an assistant. As a consultant.”
My ears perked up.
Not because of embarrassment—
but because this was the exact opportunity I had been waiting for.
The next morning, it felt like a different world had woken me up.
Mark suddenly became kind.
“Elena,” he said over coffee, “if you want… I can help you find a job.”
I smiled.
“Thanks,” I replied. “But I already have an interview.”
He was surprised.
“Really? Where?”
“At Orion Tech Asia.”
He fell silent.
And that’s when I first saw—
fear.
Within a week, the news spread.
Not who I was—
but what I could do.
Suddenly, those who had previously insulted me were messaging me.
“Girl, we’re proud of you!”
“We know you really have potential.”
“Maybe you can refer us?”
I watched them.
And that’s when I learned the first lesson of my new world:
Not everyone who says hello is happy for you.
Only a few want to come along.
One night, I found Trina in the kitchen.
“Elena,” she said, forcing a smile. “I didn’t know… you were this smart.”
“Just a person,” I replied.
He came closer.
“You know, we can work together. Mark—”
“Don’t bring him in,” I cut him off. “He’s not part of the decisions I’m making right now.”
His face hardened.
And that’s when I saw—
he wasn’t a friend. He was a danger.
At Orion Tech, Reed offered me a contract.
A big project.
A regional takeover.
If I succeeded—
I would be the youngest Strategic Director in Asia.
If I failed—
I would be the scapegoat.
And what hurt more:
I would be going against the company Mark worked for.
I went home that night, the contract in my hand.
I stared at Mark—the man I had loved, protected, and taught to be a “pillar.”
He smiled, not knowing.
And in my heart, I asked myself:
Am I willing to choose myself—even if it means ruining my marriage?
I grabbed the pen.
All it took was one signature.
Outside, thunder rolled.
And that was how the night ended—
not with revenge,
but with an opportunity that could change everything… or destroy me forever.
