The boy’s words were cut short because the man tightened his grip on his shoulder.
“You owe me that, kid,” the burly man said firmly. His eyes were red, smelling of alcohol even in the blazing sun. “Do you think you can roam around here for free? Whose territory is this?”
“Brother… I’m not coming back…” the boy replied shakily.
“Not coming back?” the man grinned. “Who’s going to give you a place? Who’s going to protect you? Huh?”
I stood up straight even though I could feel my knees shaking.
“Wait a minute,” I said calmly. “What do you mean?”
He looked me up and down, then frowned.
“And who are you? A social worker? Or did that kid just get fooled?”
I didn’t back down.
“He robbed me,” I replied bluntly. “But I got my bag back. You have nothing to do with this.”

Suddenly he laughed—loud, rude, as if he didn’t care about the onlookers.
“I have nothing to do with it?” He came closer to me. “That kid, he’s my man. They live here on my boss’s land. In exchange? They need to earn money.”
It was as if cold water had been poured over me.
“Earn money? By stealing?” I asked angrily.
“Strategy,” he replied. “If they don’t want to, they can leave. But where are they going? Under the bridge?”
The kid bowed his head. His shoulders were shaking.
“How much?” I asked suddenly.
He was surprised. “What?”
“How much do you say he owes?”
The surroundings fell silent. It was as if even the air was listening.
“Three thousand,” he replied. “He said his brother bought the medicine. But he didn’t pay.”
Three thousand.
That was almost the total I had earned in two weeks at my little barbeque.
I took a deep breath.
“If I pay,” I said, “will you stop them?”
He laughed again, but with a hint of mockery.
“Pay? Can you?”
I looked at the boy. His cheeks were wet.
“Ma’am, don’t worry… I’ll pay…” he whispered.
“What will you pay?” I shouted. “Your life?”
The man blinked, as if he hadn’t expected my tone.
“I can,” I replied, although I still couldn’t figure out how. “But after this, you won’t be able to get back at them.”
A moment of silence.
Then he grinned. “A week. Bring me the money here. If not… you know.”
He let go of the child and walked away, as if nothing had happened.
My hand was shaking.
Not because of fear—but because of the weight of the decision I had made.
“Ma’am… why did you do that?” the child asked as we walked to the drugstore.
“What’s your name?” I asked back.
“Rico.”
“How old is the youngest?”
“Eight. Her name is Lina.”
I nodded. “Rico, stealing is not the solution. I understand why you did it. But it’s still wrong.”
“Yes…” he bowed. “But we have no other way…”
I stopped in front of the drugstore.
“From now on, there is a way.”
He looked at me, full of doubt and hope.
When we returned to the shack, I could see their condition more clearly. The roof was leaking. The floor was wet. The mattress Lina was lying on was thin and dirty.
I approached the child.
“Hi, Lina,” I said calmly. “I’m Mila.”
She was pale. Her lips were trembling.
“Brother… who is she?” she asked softly.
“She’s the one… I robbed,” Rico replied, almost in a whisper.
Lina looked at me, fear and shame evident on her face.
“That’s not important anymore,” I said, holding her forehead. It was hot. Too hot.
“Rico, we need to take her to the health center.”
“There’s a fee—”
“No. I know someone.”
I don’t know where I got that courage. But at that moment, it was as if someone was pushing me.
That night, we were not prepared.
My mother and I sat down in front of a candle.
“Mom,” he said softly. “Aren’t I angry because we don’t have noodles?”
I smiled, but there was a pain in my chest.
“Are you angry?”
He shook his head. “No. Because there’s a sick child, right? That’s more important.”
I couldn’t help but hug him tightly.
“Thank you, son.”
“Mom…” he looked at me. “Are they going to stay with us?”
I was stunned.
I didn’t know the answer yet.
But in my mind, the man kept saying—
A week.
Three thousand.
And if I can’t pay?
On the third day, I returned to the shack with the porridge and medicine.
But when I got there, the surroundings were chaotic.
There were people.
Someone was shouting.
“And who are you to interfere in my business?” It was the voice of a strong man.
I ran closer.
He was holding Rico by the collar. Lina was kneeling next to him, crying.
“He won’t steal from you anymore!” I shouted.
“The week hasn’t even ended yet!” he shouted back.
I walked closer, facing him.
“The money is already mine.”
He was stunned.
I slowly took the envelope out of my bag. My hand was shaking.
I sold half of the barbecue equipment.
I borrowed the rest.
“Here,” I said, handing it over. “Three thousand.”
He stared at me, as if he was hesitating.
Then he grabbed the envelope and counted the contents.
“Are you sure?” he asked. “One wrong move by this kid, I’ll take them back.”
“They won’t come back here,” I replied.
“What do you mean?”
I took a deep breath.
“I’ll take them with me.”
The surroundings fell silent.
“Huh?” the listeners whispered in unison.
“Are you crazy?” the man asked. “Are you going to feed two more mouths?”
“Three,” I replied. “With yours if necessary.”
He stepped back, seemingly taken aback by my answer.
“Let’s see how far your kindness will go,” he said coldly before finally leaving.
The three of us were left in front of the shack.
“Ma’am… is it true?” Rico asked tremblingly. “Will you take us with you?”
I looked at their house. At the holes in the roof. At the thin walls.
At the eyes filled with fear.
“If you agree,” I replied.
Lina came over and hugged me weakly.
“Thank you…”
I felt a new chapter in my life open.
I didn’t know if I could handle it.
I didn’t know if it was right.
But for the first time since my husband’s death, I felt something different—
A reason bigger than my own sadness.
That night, the four of us lay in bed in my small house.
It was cramped. Hot. But quiet.
“Mom…” my daughter whispered. “Can I call them brother and sister?”
I smiled in the dark.
“Can I.”
On the other bed, I heard Rico crying softly.
“Rico?” I called.
“Ma’am… I don’t know how to thank you…”
“You don’t have to,” I replied. “But I have one condition.”
“What?”
“You’re going to school. You and Lina are the same. And you’re not going back to the way you were.”
“Yes,” he replied firmly.
I closed my eyes with a smile.
Little did I know that outside the house, a shadow was watching.
And in his hand, he held a cellphone.
“Boss,” he whispered to the person he was talking to. “The woman has already taken the two children.”
There was a moment of silence on the other line.
“That’s good news,” the voice replied coldly. “They’ll be easier to get.”
My eyes widened suddenly, not because I heard something—
but because I had a strange feeling in my chest.
It felt like a storm was coming.
I didn’t know who the real enemy was.
I didn’t know what system I was operating when I saved those two children.
But one thing was clear—
The h4blot in my bag was no accident.
And my saving them… could open the door to a more dangerous world.
In the darkness of that night, while the three children under my roof slept peacefully, someone was planning how to get them back.
And at that moment, it wasn’t just three thousand at stake.
But all of our lives.
