We know Ted Flon as one of the bravest and most respected voices on radio and television here in the Philippines.  For almost 4 years, he has been the backbone of ordinary people when it comes to news about the government, and issues in our society. But in recent years, many of us Filipinos have become increasingly surprised because we no longer see him on our TV screens very often.

Thank you very much.  Ted Fayon’s story is not just about becoming a famous news anchor because it is a story of intense effort that started from the bottom.  He was born in 1962 in Manila and his father was a jeepney driver while his mother was a market vendor. Due to the hardships of life back then, Ted experienced having to work at a young age while he was studying in Tacloban.
He became a waiter, a construction worker, and even sold slippers just to supplement his family’s expenses.  These experiences gave  him a deep understanding of the feelings of our poor countrymen. When it came to his studies, things weren’t easy for him either because he took different courses several times that he couldn’t finish right away .
He tried economics at Letran and also switched to mass communication at Divine World University but had to drop out to work.  Despite all these trials, he did not give up until he obtained his degree in broadcast communication from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.  His dedication to studies opened the door for him to enter the world of media.
His radio career began in 1982 where he first worked as a driver and reporter at a small station in Tacloban.  Because of his speaking skills and his ability to handle programs, he quickly gained attention until he landed on major stations in Angeles City. In 1990, this is where his long tenure at ABS-CBN began as a news editor.
Soon, he also became an anchor on radio and television, where we came to know programs like Hoy gising and TV Patrol. To better understand the weight of his loss from television, we need to take a look at what Ted Philon has that other reporters don’t.   There are many great speakers, but Ted has a unique way of delivering news that goes directly to people’s hearts .
He doesn’t just read a script in front of the camera because he tries to explain what impact each news story will have on the lives of ordinary Filipinos. This is why when he speaks, many feel that it is not just a job but a true concern for others. His programs became the voice of the people who are often not heard by the government.
Given his honesty and integrity, it is no wonder that  he has received a multitude of awards over the years.  In 2000, he was recognized as the best public service program host for Hoy gising.  This is a great proof that even when he was just starting out, his dedication was palpable. He is also not just famous because he earned Hall of Fame status at the Anak TV Makabata Awards.
This means that parents and teachers have repeatedly chosen him as a good influence for young people.  Apart from that, he has been given many other prestigious awards such as the KBP Golden Dove Awards for his excellence in both radio and television. But did you know that Ted also tried to enter the world of politics? In 2001, he was elected as the representative of the first district of Leyte.
During his three years in office, he devoted his time to education and infrastructure projects. These are things that are close to his heart because he knows what it feels like to not have proper opportunities when he was young.  Although his time in government was not perfect, it demonstrated his desire to directly help create laws for the betterment of the majority.
After his term in 2004, he chose to return to journalism because that is where he truly felt he could serve the people better. But behind all these successes and awards, Ted also went through a very difficult trial.  which shook his personal life. In April 2009, a sad news shook the entire country when his wife Trina was found with a gunshot wound to the head inside their house in Quezon City.
This incident has become the center of discussion and intense investigation by authorities such as the NBA. Many questions and doubts arose at that time because there seemed to be details that did not immediately match up for the police. This tragedy was one of the most difficult times Ted faced as he was constantly watched and judged by the public.
The investigation into the death of Ted Philon’s wife, Trina, has not been easy due to the amount of false information that has surfaced and witness stories that do not match. At first, the police really took a hard look at everyone in the house, including Ted.  But after a lengthy investigation by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), their report revealed that no one else was with Trina when the incident occurred.
According to mental health experts and evidence analysis, it was proven that the bullet wound was self- inflicted due to Trina’s severe depression and severe financial problems . Even though the NBI has released this official decision, the public’s questions still haven’t stopped. There were even issues of obstruction of justice or the wrongful movement in the area where the incident occurred, which caused Ted’s family to become even more stressed under the scrutiny of the media.
Just imagine the weight of what he went through as someone who reports on the problems of others.  He, in turn, became the subject of the news in a way he never expected. But despite all these pains and trials, Ted chose to remain strong and continue his duty to the Filipino people. After many years, another big surprise came for all of us.
On August 31, 2020, Ted Philon finally said goodbye to TV Patrol and his program Philon now on ABSCBN. Many were saddened because we had been with his voice on the said station for almost three decades.  It was clarified that his departure was a personal decision and not due to any coercion. Ted just wanted to start a new chapter in his life and try a different way to help and serve more people.
Ted did not disappoint us because it was n’t long before we heard and watched him again on TV5 and Radyo 5. This is where the unexpected tandem of him and DJ Chacha was formed, becoming a favorite of many every morning.  In their program, they combine serious news and discussions that are more accessible to younger people and ordinary citizens.
We can see here that even though he changed stations, he did not lose his principle of providing information with care. To this day, he continues to deliver news on Good Morning, proving that you don’t have to stay on a big network just to make real change in society. With the many experiences Ted Philon has gone through, from selling slippers to dealing with personal tragedies and job changes, it is clear that his life is full of lessons.
