…“Do you know how expensive my shoes are?!”
Suddenly Tanya pushed Doña Corazon’s hand away from the table. The old woman groaned in pain. Her whole body trembled, like a child who had been scolded.
“You’re so artful!” Tanya hissed. “If only I could, I’d just leave you here alone!”
Inside the closet, Rafael’s eyes were already welling up with tears. His jaw was shaking. Every scream Tanya made was like a knife piercing his chest.
But she chose to stay.
She chose to see the whole truth.
THE CRUELEST FACE
Tanya took her bag and sprayed perfume.
“I’m leaving now. I have a lunch date,” he said coldly.
He looked at the bed. “Don’t move. If anything happens to you, it’s your problem.”

He closed the door.
Silence.
Time was cut short.
Only Doña Corazon’s soft moans and labored breathing could be heard.
Rafael came out of the closet.
It was as if his world had collapsed.
He approached the bed, knelt down, and held his mother’s hand.
“Ma… forgive me,” he whispered, crying. “I didn’t know… I didn’t know it was like this…”
He stroked his mother’s hair. Her lips were trembling, as if she wanted to say something but couldn’t form the words.
THE PERSON HE DIDN’T EXPECT
Suddenly someone knocked.
Knock. Knock.
Rafael stood up. He quickly wiped his tears and hid in the closet again—but only slightly, so he could see who it was.
The door slowly opened.
A woman in a cleaning uniform entered. Carrying a bucket, a rag, and a small lunch box.
Lina—the house janitor.
“Doña Cora?” she called softly. “I’m Lina… just a moment, okay.”
She approached the bed like a child approaching its mother.
She wasn’t disgusted.
She wasn’t complaining.
She immediately wiped the floor, carefully cleaning the glass panes with a towel so as not to hurt the old man.
“Hey, your feet are cold,” she said, grabbing a blanket.
“Here you go… there…”
She wiped Doña Corazon’s arm.
When she saw the bruises, she gasped.
“Who did this to you…?” she whispered, tears welling up.
The old man couldn’t answer. He just moaned.
Lina took her lunch box.
She opened it.
It was soggy. It was still hot.
“This won’t be expensive,” he said as he cooled the spoon,
“but I put a little ginger in it. It’s good for you.”
He slowly fed Doña Corazon.
“Sniff… there… slowly.”
Inside the closet, Rafael gave in.
He knelt down.
He covered his mouth to keep from crying.
A janitor.
A lowly cleaner.
But with more heart than the woman he almost married.
THE DECISION
After a few hours, Doña Corazon fell asleep—clean, comfortable, holding a small rosary that Lina had handed her.
Lina packed her things.
Before leaving, she held the old man’s hand.
“I’ll be back tomorrow,” she promised. “You’re not alone.”
After she left, Rafael came out.
“Miss…” he called out tremblingly.
Lina was shocked.
“S-sir Rafael?! You’re here?!”
Rafael couldn’t speak.
He knelt down.
A CEO.
A billionaire.
He knelt down in front of a cleaner.
“Thank you,” his voice cracked. “Thank you for taking care of my mother… in a way I couldn’t.”
Lina stepped back. “Sir, don’t—it’s just my job—”
“NO,” Rafael said firmly. “That’s not a job. That’s a person. That’s a heart.”
TANYA’S FINAL FALL
That evening, Tanya returned—smiling, carrying shopping bags.
But she suddenly turned pale.
She saw Rafael… standing next to her mother’s bed.
“R-Rafael? I thought you were in Singapore—”
“I’m done,” he replied coldly.
“What?” Tanya laughed. “What’s wrong with you?”
Rafael reached for his cellphone.
There was a video.
Everything.
Screaming.
Abuse.
Pain.
Tanya sat up. Softening.
“Rafael… babe… I just explained—”
“Go away,” he interrupted. “Now.”
“You can’t—”
“All your credit cards, canceled. Your condo, mine. Your career? It’s over.”
Tanya fell silent.
No more tears.
No more art.
She left devastated.
EPILOGUE
A few months later…
Doña Corazon was in a private care facility—the best in the country.
Every day, someone visited.
Not a model.
Not a socialite.
But Lina—now a head caregiver, with a scholarship given by Rafael to study nursing.
One day, as Rafael sat next to his mother, she gently held his hand.
“Thank you… son,” Doña Corazon whispered.
Rafael smiled, tears in his eyes.
Finally, he learned a lesson that money cannot buy:
True wealth is not the beautiful person in front of you—
but the person who is good even when no one is looking.
